Front doors with glass?

At bespoke steel doors we hear these questions very often. Is it secure enough or will it last as long as a solid door. Is it a good idea? Is it strong enough?

We asked those questions, but not our project managers.! We asked our clients for an honest opinion why they decided to choose glass front doors.

Is a glass front door a good idea?

I absolutely love mine. It lets in loads of natural light and makes the hallway feel bigger and brighter. I went for frosted glass because I didn’t want people seeing straight in, and it still feels private. Honestly, it’s one of the best upgrades we’ve done to the house.

At first, I was worried about security, but the glass in these doors is toughened and double-glazed, so it’s really solid. No regrets at all.

The only thing is fingerprints show up more when my kids constantly sneak peak through them, so I’m forever wiping it down, but that’s a small price to pay for how it looks.

Sarah,

How much does a new front door with glass cost?

We went for a front door with a large glass panel, and honestly it was worth every penny. Ours cost about £3300 fitted, and it feels really solid and secure. I did see some more basic doors with glass for around £1400 and more but we wanted something a bit more high-end with better insulation and a sleek modern design.

To be fair, prices are all over the place. When we were shopping around, we had quotes anywhere from £1400 to £4,500 for steel doors with glass, depending on the style and type of glazing. The ones with sidelights or decorative handles were definitely at the top end, but they really make a statement.

Miri,

How much should a new front door cost installed?

We had ours supplied and fitted for £2800 all-in. That included taking out the old door, installing the new one, and making good around the frame.

If you buy the door separately and just pay a fitter, expect to pay around £600–£800 for installation alone. Some companies charge more because they include warranties and all the paperwork.

It’s worth paying a bit extra for someone who knows what they’re doing, you don’t want gaps or drafts later on.

Rupert,

Why are glass front doors better then solid door?

We decided to go for a steel front door with glass, and honestly, I’m so glad we did. It completely transformed the entrance to our house. The glass lets in loads of natural light, so the hallway feels bright and welcoming instead of dark and shut off like it used to. It also looks so much more modern and stylish, we’ve had so many compliments from neighbours already!

Olivia,
